Japanese Garden

www.japanesegarden.com
Nestled in the scenic west hills of Portland, Oregon, the Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty which has been proclaimed one the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan. The Garden was conceived in the early 1960s by a group of Portland citizens interested in promoting a more intimate relationship between the peoples of Japan and our city and state.

At the heart of a Japanese garden is harmony with nature. Through the careful use of plants, stones, and water, areas of serene and quiet beauty emerge. These peaceful spots lend themselves to meditation, contemplation, and a sense of place. Our 5.5 acre Garden is composed of five separate garden styles: a Strolling Pond Garden, a Tea Garden, a Natural Garden, a Flat Garden, and a Sand & Stone Garden. The Garden includes an authentic Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and an unsurpassed view of Mt. Hood.

Oregon Zoo

www.oregonzoo.org
In 1887, Richard Knight, a local pharmacist who collected animals as a hobby, officially presented his menagerie to the city and the oldest zoo west of the Mississippi was created. The Oregon Zoo is home to animals from all corners of the world, including Asian elephants, Peruvian penguins and Arctic polar bears. From the mist-filled Africa Rain Forest to the majestic Great Northwest exhibits, the zoo encourages visitors to understand and experience the natural world. Committed to conservation of endangered species and their habitats—both locally and around the globe—the zoo is a center for wildlife preservation and field research. The Oregon Zoo’s award-winning education programs serve nearly 700,000 people both at the zoo and at schools, senior and community centers around the region. A summer concert series, seasonal events and the zoo railway help this popular Oregon attraction draw more than one million visitors each year. The Oregon Zoo is all of this, but it is also a safe place for families to share moments of discovery and fun.

Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum

HOME OF THE SPRUCE GOOSE
The Museums and IMAX complex are located at:
500 NE Captain Michael King Smith Way
McMinnville, OR 97128
www.sprucegoose.org
The Evergreen Aviation Museum is home to the HK-1 Flying Boat, dubbed the `Spruce Goose,` sprawls across the museum’s floor, dwarfing other aircraft on display like the Corsair, the Avenger and the SR-71 Blackbird. Designed during WWII by eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes as a prototype for transporting troops and equipment, the Spruce Goose flew only once yet remains a marvel of engineering. The monstrous plane was built entirely of wood - though mostly birch, not spruce - to conserve valuable metals needed for the war effort. The Flying Boat boasts eight engines on massive wings that span 318 feet, and the plane’s tail towers eight stories high.

I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine.
